Los Angeles (US: (listen) lawss AN-jl-s; Spanish: Los Ángeles [los axeles], lit. 'The Angels'), often referred to by its initials L.A., is the largest city in the state of California and the second most populous city after New York City. It covers about 469 square miles (1,210 km²) and is the seat of Los Angeles County, which is the most populous county in the United States with an estimated 9.86 million as of 2022. The city was founded on September 4, 1781, under Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, on the village of Yaanga. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the 2028 Summer Olympics. In 2018, the Los Angeles metropolitan area had a gross metropolitan product of over $1.0 trillion, making it the city with the third-largest GDP in the world. It also has the busiest container port in the Americas. The local English pronunciation of the name of the city has varied over time.Since the 1930s, has been most common. Pronunciation of the name

Los Angeles is the primary city name, but also Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, View Park are acceptable city names or spellings, Crenshaw on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Since the 1930s, has been most common. In 1934, the United States Board on Geographic Names decreed that this pronunciation be used. This was also endorsed in 1952 by a "jury" appointed by Mayor Fletcher Bowron to devise an official pronunciation. In 1908, librarian Charles Fletcher Lummis, who argued for the name's pronunciation with a hard g, reported that there were at least 12 pronunciation variants. In the early 1900s, the Los Angeles Times advocated for pronouncing it Loce AHNG-hayl-ais, approximating Spanish [los axeles], by printing the respelling under its masthead for several years. This did not find favor. Since the 1880s the pronunciation lohss ANG-gl-s emerged out of a trend in California to give places Spanish, or Spanish-sounding, names and pronunciations. The pronunciation lawss AN-jl-s was established following the 1850 incorporation of the city and was most common until the 1950s, when it was adopted by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names. In 1952, a jury was appointed by the mayor to devise a pronunciation for the city's name. The jury's decision was made to use the pronunciation of lawss AN-l-s, which has been in use ever since. It is the most common pronunciation of the name of Los Angeles, followed by lawss A-s-L-S-E-S and lawss L-A-S.

History

Los Angeles was settled by the Tongva (Gabrieleño) and Chumash tribes. In 1781, a group of forty-four settlers known as "Los Pobladores" founded the pueblo (town) they called El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, 'The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels' In 1846, during the wider Mexican-American war, marines from the Mexican militias fought the siege of Los Angeles where 150 Mexican militias which eventually surrendered. By 1900, the population had grown to more than 102,000, putting pressure on the city's water supply. By 1923, the discoveries had helped California become the country's largest oil producer, accounting for about one-quarter of the world's petroleum output. The present-day city has the largest Roman Catholic archdiocese in the United States. The original name of the settlement is disputed; the Guinness Book of World Records rendered it as "El Puebla de Nuestro Áñora de los Porciúncula"; other sources have shortened or alternate versions of the longer name. Los Angeles created the first municipal zoning ordinance in the U.S. On September 14, 1908, the Los Angeles City Council promulgated residential and industrial land use zones. In 1910, Hollywood merged into Los Angeles, and the city became a suburb of the larger city. In 1916, the city created a comprehensive comprehensive zoning ordinance.

Geography

Los Angeles is both flat and hilly. The highest point in the city proper is Mount Lukens at 5,074 ft (1,547 m) The city is subject to earthquakes because of its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mexican Fan Palms, Canary Island Palms and Queen Palms are common in the area, although only the last is native to California, though still not native to the City of LA. The city's street patterns generally follow a uniform grid plan, with uniform block lengths and occasional cut blocks for each block. However, this is complicated by rugged terrain, which has necessitated having different grids for each neighborhood. These neighborhoods are well-defined enough that the city has nearly all signage which marks nearly all of them nearly every street. The Los Angeles River, which is largely seasonal, is the primary drainage channel. It was straightened and lined in 51 miles (82 km) of concrete by the Army Corps of Engineers to act as a flood control channel.

Demographics

The 2010 U.S. census reported Los Angeles had a population of 3,792,621. Non-Hispanic Whites were 28.7% of the population in 2010, compared to 86.3% in 1940. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 1,838,822 persons (48.5%). Los Angeles is home to people from more than 140 countries speaking 224 different identified languages. Ethnic enclaves like Chinatown, Historic Filipinotown, Koreatown, Little Armenia, Little Ethiopia, Tehrangeles, Little Tokyo, Little Bangladesh, and Thai Town provide examples of the polyglot character of Los Angeles. The largest Asian ethnic groups are Filipinos (3.2%) and Koreans (2.9%), which have their own established ethnic enclaves. Chinese people, which make up 1.8% of LA's population, reside mostly outside of the city limits and rather in the San Gabriel Valley of eastern Los Angeles County, but make a sizable presence in the city, notably in Chinatown. African Americans have been the predominant ethnic group in South Los Angeles, which has emerged as the largest African American community in the western United States since the 1960s. The city is also home to Armenians, Assyrians, Iranians and Iranians, many of whom live in enclaves in the Central Los Angeles region. The highest concentration of African Americans include Crenshaw, Baldwin Hills, Baldwin Park, Leimert Park, Manchester Square, Manchester Park, and Watts.

Economy

The economy of Los Angeles is driven by international trade, entertainment (television, motion pictures, video games, music recording, and production), aerospace, technology, petroleum, fashion, apparel, and tourism. In the 2017 Global Financial Centres Index, Los Angeles was ranked as having the 19th most competitive financial center in the world. One of the five major film studios, Paramount Pictures, is within the city limits, its location being part of the so-called "Thirty-Mile Zone" of entertainment headquarters in Southern California. Los Angeles has been classified an "alpha world city" according to a 2012 study by a group at Loughborough University. The Department of Cannabis Regulation enforces cannabis legislation after the legalization of the sale and distribution of cannabis in 2016. As of October 2019, more than 300 existing cannabis businesses (both retailers and their suppliers) have been granted approval to operate in what is considered the nation's largest market. The Los Angeles metropolitan area has a gross metropolitan product of over $1.0 trillion (as of 2018), making it the third-largest economic metropolitan area in the World after Tokyo and New York. Los LA is home to three Fortune 500 companies: AECOM, CBRE Group, and Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. Other companies headquartered in Los Angeles and the surrounding metropolitan area include The Aerospace Corporation, California Pizza Kitchen, Capital Group Companies, Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, Dine Brands Global, DreamWorks Animation, Dollar Shave Club, Fandango Media, and Trader Joe's.

Arts and culture

There are 841 museums and art galleries in Los Angeles County, more museums per capita than any other city in the U.S. The city's food culture is a fusion of global cuisine brought on by the city's rich immigrant history and population. As of 2022, the Michelin Guide recognized 10 restaurants granting 2 restaurants two stars and eight restaurants one star. Los Angeles is the site of the USC School of Cinematic Arts which is the oldest film school in the United States. The Los Angeles Music Center is "one of the three largest performing arts centers in the nation", with more than 1.3 million visitors per year. The Hollywood Sign, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Capitol Records Building, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, and the Griffith Observatory are important landmarks in the city. The L.A. Public Library system operates 72 public libraries in the City. The Venice Canal Historic District and boardwalk, Theme Building, Bradbury Building, Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles City Hall, Hollywood Bowl, battleship USS Iowa, Watts Towers, Staples Center, Dodger Stadium, and Olvera Street are also important landmarks. The Santa Monica Beach Boardwalk is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The Griffith Observatory is the world's largest observatory, with a collection of more than 2,000 historic buildings. The Getty Center is the largest art museum in the Western United States, and is part of the J. Paul Getty Trust, the world’s wealthiest art institution.

Sports

The city of Los Angeles and its metropolitan area are the home of eleven top-level professional sports teams. Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the United States but hosted no NFL team between 1995 and 2015. The city has twice hosted the Summer Olympic Games: in 1932 and in 1984, and will host the games for a third time in 2028. The Forum, SoFi Stadium, Dignity Health Sports Park, the Rose Bowl, Angel Stadium, and the Honda Center are also in adjacent cities and cities in Los Angeles's metropolitan area. The UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) are Division I teams in the Pac-12 Conference, but will soon be moved to the Big Ten Conference. The Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer (MLS) are among the other teams based in the city. Los Los Angeles will be one of eleven US host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with matches set to be held at So Fi Stadium. The Rose Bowl also hosts an annual and highly prestigious NCAA college football game called the Rosebowl, which happens every New Year's Day. Los LA is one of six North American cities to have won championships in all five of its major leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL, MLS, and MLS), completing the feat with the Kings' 2012 Stanley Cup title. The LA Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and LA Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) are also among the teams that play in neighboring communities but use the city's name.

Government

Los Angeles is a charter city as opposed to a general law city. The current charter was adopted on June 8, 1999, and has been amended many times. The elected government consists of the Los Angeles City Council and the mayor of Los Angeles, which operate under a mayorcouncil government. There are 15 city council districts. In the California State Assembly, Los Angeles is split between fourteen districts, and in the United States House of Representatives, it is split among ten congressional districts. The city has many departments and appointed officers, including the LAPD, the Board of Police Commissioners, and the Housing Authority of the City of L.A. (HACLA) The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) also has a branch of the city library, the LAPL, which is located in downtown Los Angeles. The mayor is Karen Bass, and there are about 90 neighborhood councils. The neighborhood councils are relatively autonomous and spontaneous in that they identify their own boundaries, establish their own bylaws, and elect their own officers. Residents elect supervisors for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th supervisorial districts, as well as the city attorney, a county office, and controller. There is a city council district for the city's first district, and a city district for its second district, for the third and fourth districts, for a total of 15 city districts for Los Angeles to represent. The U.S. State Assembly has 14 districts, while the state Senate has eight districts.

Education

There are three public universities within the city limits: California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), California State. University, Northridge (CSUN) and University of California, LA (UCLA) The community college system consists of nine campuses governed by the trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District. The Claremont Colleges consortium includes the most selective liberal arts colleges in the U.S. and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), one of the top STEM-focused research institutions in the world. In October 2005, the Metro Orange Line opened with two stations, Van Nuy's station (Los Angeles Metro) and Sepulveda station. A new Los Angeles County family services building was built on the southwest corner of Vannuys Blvd. and Saticoy Street in 2016. In 1991, Marvin Braude, a member of the L.A. City Council, redesignated a 45-block area of van Nuys as a part of Sherman Oaks. This redesignated area included the community of Magnolia Woods. Some area residents had presented a petition and several original deeds that stated "Sherman Oaks" to Braude. They argued that the area was a partof Sherman Oaks until the 1960s, when ZIP Codes labeling the area as Van NuYS were established. Geography and climate

Van Nuys is bordered on the north by North Hills, on the northeast by Panorama City, and on the east by Valley Glen. It is also bordered by the Sepulveda Basin, Lake Balboa, and Northridge. Some former Van Nuys neighborhoods won approval in 2009 to break off and join neighboring neighborhoods. City Council member Tony Cardenas "suggested the change was motivated by racism," he said. The change was approved by the Los Angeles City Council on November 6, 2009. The new boundaries were approved on a vote of 9-0, with one member of the City Council dissenting. The vote was on behalf of the residents of the former neighborhoods, who said they wanted to break away from Van Nuy's boundaries to raise their property values. It was the first time in the history of Los Angeles that such a move had been approved by a city council in more than a decade. The move was approved on November 7, 2009, by a vote by the Council of Neighborhoods, with the support of the Mayor's Office of Planning and Development, and the City of Van NuY's Board of Supervisors. The decision was made on the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Board of Trustees, which approved the change on November 8, 2008, with a vote on November 9, 2008. The City Council's vote on the new boundaries was on November 10, 2008; the vote was approved unanimously on November 13, 2009; the decision was to join the neighboring neighborhoods of Valley Glen, Sherman Oaks, and LakeBalboa.

Population

The 2000 U.S. census counted 136,443 residents in the 8.99-square-mile Van Nuys neighborhood. Mexico (41.5%) and El Salvador (17.3%) were the most common places of birth for the 49.8% of the residents who were born abroada. There were 4,917 families headed by single parents or 21.3%, considered high for both the city and the county. The median yearly household income in 2008 dollars was $41,134, considered average for the city. Renters occupied 73.9% ofThe housing stock, and house- or apartment-owners held 26.1%. The neighborhood was considered "moderately diverse" ethnically within Los Angeles. The breakdown was Hispanics, 60.5%; whites, 23.1%; Asians, 6.4%; blacks, 6%; and others, 4%. In 2000, the median age for residents was 28, considered young for city and county neighborhoods, and the percentages of residents aged 10 or younger and 19 to 34 were among the highest in Los Angeles County. The percentages of households that earned $40,000 or less were high for the county, as well as the percentage of those who earned $30,000-plus. The neighborhood had a population of 11,542 people per square mile in 2000, considered the average for Los Angeles and the city as a whole. The percentage of residents who are under the age of 30 was among the lowest in the city, but the highest for the country.

Economy

Van Nuys has two Target stores, one on Sepulveda and Hatteras, and another on Raymer and Kester. General Motors operated an automobile factory at Van Nuys Boulevard and Arminta Street from 1947 until 1992. The plant manufactured 6.3 million vehicles, including the Chevrolet Impala, Corvair, and later was the primary location for the Nova, Camaro, and Pontiac Firebird. In 1999, The Plant shopping center opened on the former factory site, anchored by a Home Depot, OfficeMax & 16-screen Mann movie theater multiplex. Sound City Studios is a well-respected recording studio in van Nuys.Various parts of the 1984 film The Terminator were filmed in Van nuys. Van NuYS, along with Chatsworth, is home to numerous pornographic film studios, distributors, and manufacturers.Grupo TACA operates a Vannuys-area TACA Center at 6710 Van Nuy Boulevard. The U.S. Postal Service operates a post office in Van Nuies. The post office is located on the corner of Van NuY Boulevard and Sepulves Avenue. The Post Office is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. It is open to the public in the United States and to the European Union in the evenings and on weekends. The postal service operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and Imperial Beach.

Government services

The U.S. Census Bureau operates the Los Angeles Regional Office in Van Nuys. The California Department of Developmental Services operates the North Los Angeles County Regional Center on Sherman Way west of Sepulveda Boulevard. The Social Security Administration once operated a branch office on Vannuys Boulevard north of Victory Boulevard. This location was closed in 2011, and moved to Panorama City on Roscoe Blvd and Van NuYS Blvd. The agency serves a large population of developmentally disabled people living in the San Fernando Valley. The U.N. World Health Organization operates a branch of its office in Van nuys. It is located in the Lake Balboa neighborhood in Los Angeles, west of Van Nuy. The United States Postal Service operates the Civic Center Van Nuies Post Office at 6200 Van Nucy Boulevard in Vannuy. It also operates the Van Nuoy Post Office in the nearby Lake Balbo neighborhood in LA. The Los Angeles Fire Department operates Station 39 (Van Nuys), Station 90 Van NuY Airport Area, Station 100 West Van Nues, and Station 102 East Van Nuya. The L.A. Police Department operates the nearby Van Nuay Community Police Station at 6420 Sylmar Avenue, 91401, serving the neighborhood. The city's fire department also operates Station 100 (Van nuys) and Station 101 (East Van Nuays) in the West Los Angeles area. The fire department has a substation in the East Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Parks

Van Nuys Recreation Area has an auditorium and gymnasium with a capacity of 420 people. Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area to the west is a large open space park. The Metro Orange Line bicycle path connects Van Nuys to it and other valley destinations. It has numerous recreation facilities and natural areas, including a wildlife preserve, cricket complex, and archery range at Woodley Park. Delano Park has a lighted football field, a community room, an indoor gymnasIUM with no weights, picnic tables, and lighted tennis courts. The Van nuys Sherman Oaks Pool is a seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool. The senior community hall also has two community/meeting rooms, two kitchens, a play area, a shuffle board area, and two storage rooms. It is located in the same place as the park, and has eight courts. It also has a pool, a senior community center, and a multi-purpose room, as well as a pool and a senior citizen center. The park is in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, near the San Fernando Valley border. It was built in the early 1900s as part of the San Francisco Bay Area, and was named after the city's first postmaster, William "Bill" Sherman, who was born in 1881. The area is home to a variety of parks, many of which are open to the public. The city also has several other parks in the Los Angeles area, such as the Santa Catalina Mountains, the San Diego River, and the Santa Monica Mountains.

Education

15 percent of Van Nuys residents aged 25 and older had earned a four-year degree by 2000. The percentage of the same-age residents who had less than a high school diploma (43.1%) was high for Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Unified School District operates neighborhood public schools.Lycée International de Los Angeles previously operated a campus in Van nuys. The school continued to use the name "Van Nuys" despite the move. The district operates a number of charter schools, as well as private schools and a community center. The city's highest school is the University of California, Los Angeles, which has a campus on the campus of the Los Angeles Institute of Art and Design, which opened in the 1970s. It is the only L.A. public school to have a private school on its campus. It was closed in the 1980s and 1990s, but reopened in the 2000s as part of the LAUSD's expansion into the San Fernando Valley. It has since closed its private school campus, which is located on the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. It also has a community centre on the outskirts of the city, which was built in the 1990s. The community center was built to house the city's community center, which began in the late 1990s and has since been expanded. The neighborhood center is on the corner of Saticoy and Melrose avenues. It opened in 1998. The area is known as the "Little City" and was once known as "The Village".

Public libraries

The Van Nuys Branch Library of the Los Angeles Public Library serves the community. The library is located in Van NuYS, Los Angeles, California. It is located on the west side of Los Angeles. The branch is open seven days a week from 9am to 6pm. It has a collection of more than 2,000 books and magazines. It also has a computer lab, which can be used to help people with reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Transportation

Van Nuys has two Metro G Line stations: the Van Nuys (Los Angeles Metro station) and the Sepulveda. The closest airport with commercial airline service is Hollywood Burbank Airport in Burbank. All stations, and the neighborhood's major streets, are served by Metro Local, Metro Rapid, and/or other bus lines and systems. It is planned to host the East San Fernando Light Rail line by 2027 with construction starting in 2021. The area is served by the 405 (San Diego Freeway) passing through it. Other nearby freeways include the Route 101 (Ventura Freeways), the Route 170 (Hollywood Freeway), and the Golden State Freeway section of Interstate 5. The community includes a terminal for the Vannuys FlyAway Bus service, which travels to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) It is also served by Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight and the Metrolink Ventura County Line. It also has a Metro Busway station, which connects to the Metro B Line subway at the North Hollywood station, for access to Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, and other Los Angeles Metro lines. There is a bicycle path and pedestrian walkway along the G Line route, to Pierce College, Canoga Park, and Chatsworth Station on the west, and North Hollywood on the east. It has a park and ride center, which is open to the public, and a library, which has a cafe, which offers free Wi-Fi.
