Fairfield is a city in Freestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,850 at the 2020 census, down from 3,094 at the 2000 census. The city is served by the Fairfield Independent School District. Navarro College offers year-round classes at their Navarro Career & Technical College at 31°4319N 96°929W (31.721940, 96.158011). Interstate 45 passes through the west side of the city, leading north 88 miles to Dallas and south 152 miles (245 km) to Houston. U.S. Route 84 runs directly through the city leading east 35 miles (56km) to Palestine and west 63 miles (101 km)to Waco. Fairfield has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters, according to the Köppen Climate Classification system. It is the county seat of Freestones County and was founded as such in 1851. It has a total area of 5.4 square miles (14.1 km²), of which 0.004 sq miles (0.01 km²) is water, and is located in the central part of the county, near the junction of the Texas Turnpike and the Texas-New Mexico border. Interstate 45 passes through the west side of the city, leading north 88 miles to Dallas and south 152 miles to Houston. U.S. Route 84 runs directly through the city leading east 35 miles to Palestine and west 63 miles to Waco. Texas State Highway 75 (Fairway) crosses US 84 at the west end of downtown, and leads northwest 14 miles (23 km) to Streetman. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 square miles (14.1 km²), of which 0.004 sq miles (0.01 km²) is water. The city is home to the Fairfield High School, which was founded in the early 1900s. The Fairfield School District was established in the mid-1930s. It was the first high school in the state of Texas to be founded. It is located on the banks of the Brazos River, which flows into the Brazo River. Fairfield was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1940s and 1950s, Fairfield hosted the Texas State Fair, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010. The city is home to the U.S. Air Force's Fairfield Air Force Base. The Fairfield Airport is located in the city and serves the city of Fairfield and surrounding areas. The airport is one of the busiest in the state, serving a population of more than 100,000. It is located on the Texas Turnpike, which runs from San Antonio to El Centro. It was the site of the first air traffic control station in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It also served as the location of the FairFIELD Airport in the early 20th century, which served the city until the mid-20th century when it was shut down by the federal government. The U.N. has a base in Fairfield, Texas, which serves as the city's main airport. It has also been the home of Navarro University, which opened its doors in the 1930s and has a campus in the 1970s and 1980s.
