Because of its rail access, Oakes is home to several major grain elevators that handle large volumes of grain, primarily corn. The city has a total area of 1.56 square miles (4.04 km²), all land. Oakes was laid out in 1886 and named for Thomas Oakes, a railroad official. It was incorporated in 1888. The population was 1,798 at the 2020 census. It is the most populous city in Dickey County, North Dakota, United States. The median income for a household in the city was $30,263, and the median for a family was $39,625. The racial makeup of the city is 97.27% White, 0.20% Native American, 1.01% Asian, and 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.58% of the population. History

The official name is Oakes, North Dakota. Oakes was laid out in 1886. It was named for Thomas F. Oakes, a railroad official. A post office has been in operation in Oakes since 1886. The city was incorporated in 1888. It is located at the junction of the Oakes River and the Ohio River. It has a population of 1,000. The town was named after Thomas Oakes. It had a post office from 1886 to 1888. Its name was changed to Oakes in 1888 after it was incorporated. It also had a name for a local railroad official: Oakes-Foster. The Oakes name is still used today for the town of Oakesville, Ohio. It's also known as "Oakes" or "Oaks" in some areas of the U.S. and "Oake's" in other parts of the world. Oakes has two schools: Oakes Public School and Oakes High School. The athletic teams are called the Tornadoes, replacing the old name the Golden Tornadoes. The current school colors are orange, black, and white. Oakes public school provides pre-school and grades K6 to grades 712. The high school provides grades 9-12 to grades 11-13 to grades 14-16. The school is located in the town of Oakes, in the eastern part of the county. The town has a population of 2,000. It is located on the banks of the Oakes River, which runs through the center of the town. The city is home to Oakes Elementary School, Oakes Middle School, and Oake's High School, which are all located in Oakes.
