Redford Charter Township

Redford, officially the Charter Township of Redford, is a charter township in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The township shares its eastern border with the city of Detroit. The name Redford was chosen because natives and colonial European immigrants forded the River Rouge where the river runs through Redford. In the 1920s the eastern portions of the township were annexed by Detroit. In 1926 the township was given "charter" status by the Michigan legislature. Redford is the site of Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School, whose hiring practices spurred the 2012 Supreme Court Case Hosanna,Tabor, and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 2010, Redford Township had a population of 48,362. The African-American population. increased by about 200% between 2000 and 2010, while the overall population of the. township declined by 6%. The 2010 census defined Redford as a census-designated place (CDP) in the 2000 Census so that the community would appear on the list of places (like cities and villages) as well on the. list of county subdivisions (like other townships). The final statistics for the township and the CDP were identical. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29 km²), all land. The middle branch of the River. Rouge flows through the Lola Valley Park in the township. Ashcroft creek, another branch. of the Rouge River, flows for about a half mile in the southeastern corner of the Township before entering Detroit's Rouge Park.

History

Springwells Township and Bucklin Township were formally organized and laid out by gubernatorial act on April 12, 1827. The name Redford was chosen because natives and colonial European immigrants forded the River Rouge where the river runs through Redford. The township used to go all the way to Greenfield Road, but in the 1920s the eastern portions of the township were annexed by Detroit. In 1918 there was a post office named "Five Points" operating between 6 Mile Road and 7 Mile Road along the road of that name. Redford is the site of Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School, whose hiring practices spurred the 2012 Supreme Court Case Hosanna/Tabor Lutheran Church & School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In March 1833, Pekin was renamed Redford and the southern half became Dearborn Township on April 1. This annexation ceased in 1926 when the township was given "charter" status by the Michigan legislature. The current name of the town is Dearborn, which was established on March 1, 1974, and has a population of 2,856. The town's name is derived from "Dearborn," which means "home" or "place" in English, and " Dearborn" in German, which is the name of a U.S. state that was once part of the state of Michigan. The city's name was changed to Dearborn on March 2, 1974. The last day of the year is April 1, when the town celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Geography

Redford Township is a western suburb of Detroit. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29 km²) The middle branch of the River Rouge flows through the Lola Valley Park in the township. Ashcroft creek flows for about a half mile in the southeastern corner of the township before entering Detroit's Rouge Park and then into the main branch. Tarabusi Creek of the Bell Branch flows through Western Golf Club and Bell Creek Park. The township is home to the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Detroit Pistons. It is also the home of the Ypsilanti High School football team, which was founded in 1894. The Ypsi High School girls' football team won the Michigan State Championship in the 1990s. It was the first high school to win a state championship in the state of Michigan. The Michigan State University women's football team also won a state title in 1990. The U.S. National Football League's Michigan Wolverines won a national championship in 1998. The Detroit Lions won a Michigan State championship in 2000. The University of Michigan women's basketball team won a silver medal in the 2000 NCAA Division II Championship. The team was also the first Michigan State team to win the NCAA Division III Championship in 2000 and 2001. The Redford High School women's soccer team was the only team in the country to win two state titles in the same year. The school's women's team won two state championships in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Demographics

In 2010, Redford Township had a population of 48,362. The African-American population increased by about 200% between 2000 and 2010, while the overall population of the township declined by 6%. The U.S. Census Bureau also defined Redford township as a census-designated place (CDP) in the 2000 Census so that the community would appear on the list of places (like cities and villages) The final statistics for the township and the CDP were identical in the 2010 Census. The median income for a household in the township was $49,522. The per capita income was $22,263. About 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 5.4% of people age 65 or over. The township is located in Wayne County, New Jersey. It is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York by the Susquehanna River. The population was 66.4 percent White, 28.9% African American, 0.5% Native American, and 0.8% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.02%. The township has a population density of 4,597.4 per square mile (1,774.8/km²) The population of Redford was 48,364 in 2010, with 20,605 housing units at an average density of 1,835.1 per squaremile (708.4/ km²).

Education

The public schools are operated by the Redford Union School District, South Redford School District and Clarenceville School District. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit used to operate Bishop Borgess High School and Academy (closed in 2005) and Detroit Catholic Central High School. Redford Township Library is located on West Six Mile Road. The library's collection consists of 100,000 books and periodicals, 2,500 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials. The Redford Marquee, an open-air market, amphitheater and public green space, opened in July 2008. It is situated on a 2.6 acres (11,000 m2) site that is being leased for $1 for 99 years. The township is home to the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Detroit Pistons. The Detroit Lions play their home games in Redford, a suburb of Detroit, at the Joe Louis Arena. The Pistons also have a stadium in Detroit, which is located in the suburb of Novi, Michigan. The Lions also play a home game at the Field of Dreams, a baseball field in the town's downtown area. The team's mascot is the Lionskin, a red-and-white checkered flag with a white background. The football team plays in the Michigan State University Red Lions game against the University of Michigan at Redford. The game ends at 7:30 p.m. (7:30 a.M. ET).

I-96, US 24, M-5 and M-102 are among the busiest highways in the United States. I-96 is the busiest highway in the state. US 24 is one of the busiest roads in the U.S. in terms of number of lanes. Folk musician and songwriter Sufjan Stevens' song "Redford (For Yia-Yia & Pappou)," which appeared on his 2003 album Michigan, mutely chronicles Stevens' childhood experiences in Redford Township, where his grandparents lived. Stevens' grandparents were from Redford, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. The song was written in response to the town's reputation as a drug-fueled, crime-ridden town. Stevens wrote the song for his grandfather, who died in a car accident in the early 1990s. He also wrote it for his father, who was also from the town, and later for his mother, who also died in the car crash that claimed her life in 1998. He later wrote a book about his experiences in the town called "Sufjan's Redford," which was published in 2003. The book was published by Simon & Schuster, a division of Random House, and is available in hardback and paperback.

Sister cities

Redford has two sister cities, as designated by Sister Cities International: St. Johann in Tirol, Austria and Gau-Algesheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Redford is also a member of the Sister Cities of the United States of America and of the World Sister Cities Association. Redfords is located in the U.S. Census tract of Redford County, which is in the Austrian state of Tirol and the German state of Rhine-Wartheland. It has a population of 2,856. RedFords is also home to the town of St. Johannes, Austria, which has a sister city, St. John’s in Austria, and the city of Gau-algesheim in Germany, with a total population of 3,854. Red Fords is home to a Sister Cities organization, the Redford Sister Cities Society, which was founded in 1881. It is based in Redford, but has sister cities in Austria and Germany, as well as in Switzerland and France. It also has an international sister city association, the Sister Cities International, with sister cities around the world, including Redford and St. Germain in Austria. It was named after Redford's sister city St. Janssberg, Austria. The town also has a twin city, Redford in Switzerland, with which it has an agreement to be sister to St. Geroge, Switzerland.
