Englewood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charlotte and Sarasota counties in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 14,863. The name Englewood came from the brothers who developed the area in the late 19th century. The area was initially more on the modern Sarasota side of the county line. In 1921, both Sarasota and Charlotte County were created. The Sarasota County Board of Commissioners in 1999 created a special district for Engle Wood Elementary and Middle School students to use the schools in Charlotte County. The district was later expanded to include all of Charlotte County, including the town of Punta Gorda, which was once part of Sarasota. The community is part of the North PortSarasotaBradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the Charlotte County portion of the area is in the Punta Gordon Metropolitan Statistical area. The city's name comes from a Chicago-area street, Dearborn, Harvard, and Yale, which is now part of EngleWood High School. The school district also has a middle school in the area, which allows some Charlotte County residents to use it for their children. The town's name is derived from the name of a Chicago street, which has been used since the early 1900s. The first white settlers came in 1878. The Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895, along with a bad freeze in 1896, led to the decimation of many local orange plants. For this reason, by 1897, a Manatee County General Directory listed fish as the chief product for Englwood.
History
Englewood is the primary city name, but also Grove City are acceptable city names or spellings, Inglewood on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Englewood, Florida. Archeological digs in what is now Englewood discovered ceramics belonging to both the Weeden Island culture and Safety Harbor culture. One of the earliest white settlers in the area was a man named William Goff, who arrived by schooner from Tampa in 1878. On July 3, 1895, a post office was established in the region as well. In 1898, theEnglewood Inn was opened, a relatively large hotel with 16 rooms. The hotel serviced visitors from up north until it burned down in 1909. Some of the street, such as Dearborn, Harvard, and Yale, are from Chicago. By 1897, a Manatee County General Directory listed fish as the chief product for the area. In 1921, both Sarasota and Charlotte County were created. Engle Wood was initially more on the modern Sarasota side of the county line, but it would eventually expand to its current size that now resides in both counties. The name EngleWood came from their hometown, Engalwood, Chicago. The original plat of Englewoods was recorded and filed on August 17, 1896. The home lots were 1-acre (0.40 ha), and the grove lots intended for citruswere 10 acres (4.0 ha). The area was developed by three brothers, and the name Engalwoods came from Engalways, Chicago, a suburb of New York City. The Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895, along with a bad freeze in 1896, led to the decimation of many local orange plants.
