New Hope

New Hope is a city in Madison County, Alabama, United States. It is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,889. The city was originally named "Cloud's Town" in 1829 by its founder, William Cloud. It was incorporated in 1832 under the name of "Vienna" during the American Civil War. The rebuilt city was incorporated as "New Hope", taking its name from the New Hope Methodist Church. New Hope is located in southeastern Madison County at 34°3217N 86°2444W (34.538194, 86.412129) It is 19 miles (31 km) southeast of the center of Huntsville and the same distance northwest of Guntersville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km²), of which 8.6 square miles are land and 0.06 square miles of land, or 0.66%, are water. The median household income was $31,458 and the median family income was $39,427 in the city of New Hope as of the census of 2010. The racial makeup of the city was 94.80% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 1.81% Native American,0.24% Asian, and 2.09% from two or more races. About 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1% of those age 65 or over.

History

Vienna was burned by the Union Army on December 15, 1864, because of the constant skirmishes with the guerrilla fighters in the area. The rebuilt city was incorporated in 1883 as "New Hope", taking its name from the New Hope Methodist Church. The settlement was actually settled in what is now known as Cloud's Cove just off Hobbs Island Road and is a few miles from the town of New Hope. The town was originally named "Cloud's Town" in 1829 by its founder, William Cloud, and was incorporated under the name of "Vienna" on May 29, 1832. It was destroyed by the 12th Indiana Cavalry during the American Civil War in May 1864. The post office and Masonic Lodge were all that remained when Vienna was burned in December 1864 by Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Reed of the 14th Regiment, 12th Regiment of the Indiana Regiment. There was already a post office called Vienna in southern Alabama and rules were that there could not be two post offices with the same name at that time, so New Hope was incorporated as Vienna in1883. It is now a suburb of Huntsville, Alabama, with a population of about 3,000. The city is located on the Alabama-Mississippi border and was once part of the Mobile, Alabama-Florida border. It has a population in excess of 2,000 people and is located in the Mobile and Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Mobile-Tens of thousands of people live in surrounding counties.

Education

New Hope Elementary School (K-6) and New Hope High School (712) are located in New Hope, New Jersey. New Hope is a small town with a population of less than 1,000 people. It has a population of 2,816. It was the site of a World War II bombing campaign in the 1940s and 1950s, when the town was known as "New Hope" The city is located on the Alabama Turnpike, which was built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The turnpike runs through New Hope, and was named after the town's founder, William Hope. The New Hope River, which runs through the city, is a tributary of the Alabama River. The town's name is derived from the New Hope Creek, which flows through the town and was once a source of water for the town. The river was once known as the "Red River" and is now the Red River.

Demographics

New Hope did not appear on the 1890 and 1940-1950 U.S. Censuses.
